Join us for on a sketching tour of Ireland from June 11th to the 19th of 2020. Christina Wald and Vanessa Sorensen will lead participants on an 7-day trip through some of Ireland’s most beautiful country. The trip will include castles, ruins, quaint villages, magical rivers, cozy pubs, and stunning ocean views.

Where will we go?

The tour will take place in three locations: Cashel (County Tipperary), the Dingle Peninsula (County Kerry), and Connemara (County Galway). Below are a few photos of some of the sights we will see in these areas (click to enlarge).

Who will lead the tour?

The sketching part of the tour will be led by Christina Wald and Vanessa Sorensen. We are also very lucky to have Xavier professors Dr. Tim White and Dr. George Farnsworth as additional guides who have a wealth of knowledge about the history of Ireland (both natural and human).

Christina Wald is an award winning professional children’s book illustrator specializing in animal and science work. A prolific artist with over 20 years experience in the field, she has illustrated over 50 picture books and worked with numerous major publishers including Scholastic, Bloomsbury, Hachette, Penguin, National Geographic, The San Diego Zoo and many others. She is also a toy designer who has worked on products for Discovery Kids, National Geographic, and Encyclopedia Britanica. She is passionate about travel and documenting her world through Urban Sketching. She helped found her local Urban Sketchers group and works with the international organization. She holds a BS in Industrial Design from the University of Cincinnati and teaches illustration at NKU and the Art Academy.


Vanessa Sorensen is a printmaker and graphic designer. She has always had a love of the natural world and holds a Master’s degree in Zoology. She has written and illustrated several books and authors a blog called Nessy Designs that focuses on her varied creative projects. Currently her main focus is on creating fine art botanical prints through the mediums of linocut and woodcut. You can see her prints at

Dr. White is full professor at Xavier University where he teaches courses in the fields of Comparative Politics and International Relations. Most of his research is in the field of Irish Politics and Sociology and he is currently working on a project analyzing recent changes in Irish economic conditions, demography, and political culture. Dr. White has led both student and adult tours of Ireland for over 10 years. If you have any questions about Ireland he is an incredible resource.

Dr. Farnsworth is an Associate professor at Xavier University where he teaches General Biology, Animal Behavior, and Ecology. He has been taking students to Ireland since 2008 teaching about the natural history of Ireland. He especially enjoys birdwatching and always has his binoculars at the ready.

How much does it cost?

The cost of the trip is $1200 for a double occupancy room ($1700 for a single private room). This includes accomodations for 8 nights, breakfast, and all transportation. A non-refundable $600 deposit is requested to hold your space. Airfare is not included.

Do I need a passport?
Yes, you do! If you do not have a valid passport you need to apply at least 90 days in advance.

What is the temperature like?
It can be chilly at any time of year in Ireland so we suggest to bring a warm jacket and pants, plus good walking shoes. Also, we recommend bring a rain jacket.

What do I need to bring for sketching?
We will send all participants a packing list as the trip approaches. But the main art supply to bring would be a travel watercolor set.

Will I need to buy food?
Breakfast will be provided, but you are responsible for purchasing lunch, dinner, and drinks.

Do I need to change money before I go?
There will be an opportunity to use the ATM once we arrive.

Which airport should we fly into?
Transportation will be provided both to and from Shannon Airport (SNN).
